What is Flag Football?

Flag football is a modified version of tackle football and provides participants with the opportunity to develop many of the same skills, tactics and strategies without the body contact (blocking and tackling).
In flag football, defensive players pull the flag off the offensive player's belt to "stop" them as opposed to tackling the player.

Who plays Flag Football?

Men, women and children of all ages play flag football. People can play recreationally or in organized leagues. Flag football is played across Canada and around the world.

What are the programs in PEI?

Football PEI has been working hard over the last four years to develop its program of flag football. Presently there are two seasons of flag football on PEI.The present plan for offerings include: the under 16 and under 18 boys and girls spring flag program. At the present time it runs out of Summerside and Cornwall. The fall grass roots flag football program runs for kids 12 and under out of Charlottetown.

Spring Season

NFL Flag League (beginning of May to the end of June)
The spring season will include an under 16 and 18 league playing NFL flag league. This is a 5 on 5 league with 6 players on a team. The past three years teams have competed in Summerside and Cornwall. The winning team from this league represent PEI at the National Championships. This Nationals takes place in July.

7 on 7

In 2010 we will also have an under 19 league playing 7 on 7 flag football. This is a different game from the 5 on 5 game as it includes a kicking game. PEI plans to send an under 17 boys and girls team to the National Championship beginning in 2010. That team will be selected by tryouts.

JR. HIGH

In 2010 flag football will become an official PEISAA sport at the Junior High School Level for both boys and girls. They will play the 5 on 5 game. Contact your local junior high school to see if they have a team.

Fall Season

Community League (beginning of September to the end of October)
The fall season is a community based program. We will be offering programs for players in the following age groups U-10, U-12, U-14 and U-16.
There may be expanded age group offerings at both ends of the age spectrum in upcoming seasons. Communities that have participated in the past include Cornwall, Charlottetown, Stratford, Morell, Souris and Lennox Island. Currently only Cornwall runs a fall program, but we hope it will grow once more.

The community leagues are grassroots leagues designed for maximum participation and fun. There are usually some large jamborees that bring teams from different communities together in the spirit of competition.
Volunteers are always needed. If you want to help or are interested in starting a League in your area please contact Football PEI !!!
